Now this is an interesting mix... bikers & sci-fi! That's a win win combination right? Nothing but coolness could come out of this concept!
This painting was produced for none other than the Metal God Rob Halford as a cover for one of his live DVDs. The concept was basically Mr Halford arriving to the Saitama Arena (Japan) in his speederbike... in a much bigger, over the top futuristic version of Japan! Unfortunatelly, the management ultimatelly decided that it was in fact too over the top and asked me for a much more plain and simple composition. The final cover kept only a small portion of this: the digital painting of the Saitama Arena building, which is the shiny structure in the middle...
Here's the actual DVD cover which I also designed (yawn).[link]
It's really not finished... the final version was supposed to be richly decorated with shiny color billboards and all kinds of advertising in japanese characters, but they pulled the plug before entering that phase.
It is an extremelly detailed digital painting... I spent about a week painting structures and little windows because they told me they were going to print posters and billboards, so I basically used standard matte painting techinques to achieve detail. But given that I don't like to waste time and effort, I was able to re-use some of the buildings on the cover of my grahic novel!
It has been sitting in my archive for over a year... it was time to share it with the world.
I used very little source photography on this one... The little I used, was taken from a collection of pictures I did around Berlin.
